Best Rowing Accessories of 2025

My Top Accessory Recommendations for Serious Rowers

Me Rowing on Concept2 Rower

When you’re gearing up for a rowing session, the right accessories can make all the difference in your performance and comfort. You might think you only need a good erg and a willing heart, but the best rowers know that investing in quality gear, like a comfortable seat pad or a  quality hydration system, can enhance your experience considerably.

Curious about which accessories truly stand out and why they matter? Let’s explore the top ten essentials that could transform your indoor rowing experience.

Having logged over a million meters on my indoor rowing machines, I’ll be sharing my personal thoughts and experiences to help you determine what accessories will help you get the most out of your time on whatever rowing machine you have invested in.

Protect Your Flooring with a Mat for Your Rower

Rowing Machine Floor MatIf you are going to be spending some time on your rowing machine, you want to make sure that your flooring is adequately protected. A mat specifically designed for use under rowing machines can help absorb your sweat and reduce vibrations that occur during your workouts. This not only safeguards your floors from scratches and dents but also prevents dust and dirt from accumulating under your machine, which can lead to damage over time.

Many manufactures like Concept2 and WaterRower have custom branded mats for their rowing machines,  but a generic mat will serve just as well, if you don’t want to pay a permium. Just make sure that the mats are large enough for the footprint of your rower, well constructed and easy to clean of the dirt and sweat.  I found this fitness mat worked well…at roughly half the cost of the branded ones.

Additionally, you want to make sure that you have a good fitness sweat towel handy.

Seat Pads for Rowing Machines

Once you start logging some time on your rowing ergometer, you will really appreciate a bit of extra padding to optimize comfort during your sessions. A well-padded seat provides the cushioning you need to reduce pressure points, allowing you to focus more on your technique rather than discomfort.

However, it may take a bit of trial and error, to find the one that works best for you.

Like the 3 little bears, it took me a few tries.

Heavy Padding

Rowing Machine Seat Pad Heavily PaddedFiguring more was better, I started out with a heavily padded seat cushion. I figured more cushioning was better for longer session.  While it had straps to secure it to the seat and was relatively secure, it did shift a bit during rigorous rowing sprints. Additionally, it seemed to change the rowing height enough so that it didn’t quite feel right. However, if you are just looking for optimal comfort for longer rows…this one may serve you will.

Minimalist

Concept2 puts out a very cost-effective pad specifically designed for their seat. (and works for most rowing ergometer seats) While it does provide a bit of cushion, I found it to be insufficient for my needs.

Hornet Seat Pad

Hornet Padded Rower SeatOk…this one felt “just right” to me. The Hornet Watersports Seat Pad has an anti slip silicon layer and just enough padding to eliminate pressure points, while still retaining the OEM feel that was engineered into the rowing machine.

Ultimately, the one you choose will be a matter of personal preference.  But, I definitely found a seat pad to be an inexpensive upgrade that greatly enhanced the comfort and overall experience of longer sessions on the rowing ergometer.

Fans to Keep Indoor Rowers Cool

When you’re working up a sweat on your rowing machine, having the right fan can make all the difference in your comfort. There are a number of good options that I’ve used over the years. You might consider a basic model for simplicity, a cordless Ryobi for versatility, or the premium Rowenta for outstanding performance.
Each option offers unique features that cater to your specific needs while rowing.

Basic

A basic fan - one of the best rowing machine accessoriesOnce you start spending a bit more time in the seat, you’ll a basic fan is an essential accessory for any rower looking to optimize performance. Rowing can be strenuous, and maintaining a cool environment is key to sustaining your energy and focus. It not only keeps you comfortable but also helps prevent overheating, which can lead to fatigue and decreased performance.

A basic fan is usually lightweight and portable, and low profile fans are ideal for rowing.  Look for features like adjustable speed settings and remote controls, adding convenience to your setup. Investing in a reliable basic fan can make a significant difference in your training sessions.

Cordless- Ryobi

Ryobi cordless fan - a portable cooling solution accessory for rowersChoosing a cordless fan like the Ryobi can elevate your rowing experience by providing convenient, portable cooling wherever you train. This fan is designed to enhance your comfort during those hot, sweaty workouts, ensuring you stay focused and energized. The Ryobi cordless fan features a lightweight, compact design that makes it easy to transport. I have committed to the Ryobi’s ecosystem, so this was a no brainer for me.

It is cost-effective, uses the same interchangeable batteries as their tools (and being a former Dewalt tool user, I find that their lineup works just as well for the casual DIY user…at a fraction of the cost) and performs well.
The fan runs on Ryobi’s 18V battery system, which means you can use it for hours without worrying about finding an outlet.

Premium -Rowenta

Rowenta Fan -premium cooling is one of the best accessories for rowing machinesFor a premium cooling experience during your rowing sessions, the Rowenta fan stands out as an exceptional choice. This fan combines sleek design with powerful performance, ensuring you stay comfortable even during intense workouts.

While it is pricier than most fans, it is a premium selection, that justifies the price. It is , solidly constructed  and yet, has an elegant aesthetic and is engineered with thoughtful features such as a “dock’ for the remote. (I can’t tell you how many I have lost with other brands)

But what really sets it appart is it’s “whisper mode” setting which is the only fan setting that I have ever used that lets me easily drift off to sleep. Consequently, I can use this one in both my “pain cave” during the day and bring it into the bedroom on hot nights.

Hydration-The Key to Performance

Staying hydrated is essential for peak performance.
A durable water bottle with a secure holder guarantees you can easily access hydration between strokes, while a CamelBak offers hands-free convenience for those longer sessions.
Choosing the right hydration solution keeps you focused and ready to row your best.

Water Bottle

Polar Insulated Water BottleIn most situations, having a good water bottle within arms length should do the trick.  I have found that the Polar insulated water bottles are a good combination of quality and durability that do a good job of keeping fluids cold and yet are squeezable for quick and efficient hydration.  Whether I’m paddling on the river, rowing on an erg or cycling…I rarely work out with out one.

Pro Tip – If you fill it about 1/3 and toss it in the freezer, when you pull it out and fill with fluids, it will keep nice and cold for your workouts.

CamelBack

Camelbak Hydration for longer rowing sessionsIf you’re going to be competing in a longer rowing event, orlooking for an alternative to traditional water bottles, a CamelBak hydration system might be just what you need. With a CamelBak, you can sip water effortlessly through a bite valve, eliminating the need to stop and fumble with a bottle.

These hydration packs come in various sizes and styles, allowing you to choose one that suits your needs. The lightweight, ergonomic designs fit comfortably on your back, ensuring you won’t feel weighed down during your workout.

Plus, many CamelBak systems feature insulated reservoirs, keeping your water cool even on hot days. I keep mine partiall filled in the freezer for those extra hot days, so you’ll always have invigorating water at hand. (just keep in mind it take a bit of time thaw out the hose and bite valve)

Whether you’re rowing for leisure or competition, a CamelBak can enhance your experience. It allows you to focus on your performance while ensuring you stay hydrated, so you can row your best without interruptions.

Rowing Machine Phone/Tablet Holder

Brands like Vapor, Concept2, and WaterRower offer reliable holders that keep your devices safe while allowing you to access your favorite apps or track your progress. I invested in the OEM upgrades for both my Concept2 and my WaterRower. The Vapor is more cost effective and great little device that will support your cellphone, if you don’t require something large enough for a tablet.

Adding a phone or tablet which can connect to any of the many interactive apps on the market greatly enhances user engagement and overall rowing experience.

Concept2

Designed for rowers who value both performance and connectivity, the Concept2 phone and tablet holder offers a practical solution for keeping your devices secure. This accessory is specifically engineered to fit the Concept2 rower.

It does require the removal of the existing monitor support arm, but, I found that to be a simple process.

The bracket enables adjustable angles let you find the perfect viewing positionand is compatible with most smartphones and tablets.

WaterRower

Water Rower Tablet ArmWhile it was a pricier and required a bit more effort to install, the WaterRower tablet holder is aesthetically pleasing and adds a whole new dimension to the rowing experience.

Now you can combine the soothing sounds of water rowing with ability to immerse yourself in an interactive experience that lets you “row” virtually in exotic new worlds across the globe.

Vapor

Vapor Rowing Machine Phone Holder for Concept2 PM5 MonitorIf you have a Concept2 with a PM5 monitor, the Vapor phone holder will keep mobile device secure, accessible  and visible right above the monitor.
You can listen to music, stay connected with friends or connect to your favorite app…simply and efficiently.

Dimoncoat Tablet Holder

Tablet Holder thatis one of my favorite accessories for rowing machinesAlthough I have integrated OEM tablet holders on both my ergs, if you want an all purpose tablet holder that you can use anywher, this Dimoncoat tablet holder is, by far, my favorite.  I have tried a half dozen tablet holders. from telescopic tripods, to music stands, to goosenecks to adjustabel mounted …and this is the first one that has really impressed me.  It has a fairly heavy base, can be adjusted to nearly any height, provide a stable, solid mount for both phones and tablets…and offers a stunning aesthetic!  I use it in my cycling “pain cave” while “zwifting’…and absolutely love it.

Rowing Ergometer Apps

When it comes to enhancing your rowing experience, apps like ErgData and EXR are game-changers.

These tools not only track your performance but also help you analyze your workouts, making it easier to set and achieve your goals.
With the right app on your device, you can take your training to the next level.

This app connects seamlessly to your rowing machine, allowing you to track your performance metrics in real-time. With ErgData, you can monitor your splits, stroke rate, and total time, providing you with valuable insights into your workouts.

You’ll appreciate the ability to customize your display, focusing on the stats that matter most to you. Plus, ErgData syncs with your Concept2 Logbook, so you can easily keep a record of your training history and progress over time.

EXR provides a virtual rowing experience in some of the most renowned rowing venues in the world –  from Henley to the Charles River. It is a comprehensive platform for rowing enthusiasts, enabling you to analyze your workouts, set goals, and connect with fellow rowers.

With features like real-time performance metrics and customizable training plans, this app transforms your rowing sessions into effective training opportunities.

But EXR isn’t the only option out there. You might also explore apps like Rowing Coach, which focuses on technique and interactive coaching tips, or TrainingPeaks, perfect for athletes seeking detailed analytics for performance improvement.

Each app has its unique strengths, catering to different aspects of rowing, whether it’s tracking your progress or optimizing your technique.

Furthermore, many of these apps allow you to sync with wearables, enhancing your data collection and providing deeper insights into your performance.
By integrating technology into your rowing routine, you can stay motivated and informed, ensuring that every stroke counts.

Heart Rate Monitors for Serious Rowers

When it comes to tracking your performance on the water, a reliable heart rate monitor is essential.
The Garmin Fenix 7 is my personal weapon of choice. It offers advanced features, including a comfortable strap that guarantees accurate heart rate readings throughout your rowing sessions.

Heart Rate Strap

Bluetooth HRM Chest Strap for RowingWhile I prefer  just wearing my Fenix, (though the wrist based optical sensor is admittedly slightly less accurate ), a heart rate monitor strap is an essential tool for any serious rower looking to enhance their training experience. This accessory provides real-time data on your heart rate, allowing you to gauge your exertion levels effectively.

With a strap, you can maintain the ideal heart rate zone tailored to your fitness goals, be it building endurance or improving speed.

Make sure your strap can sync with your existing devices, such as smartphones or rowing machines, for seamless tracking of your performance data.
Investing in a quality heart rate monitor strap can greatly improve your training efficiency.

While some prefer Polar, overall I like the Garmin user experience better. Here is a cost effective strap that is compatible with most platforms.

Gamin Fenix 7

Garmin Fenix 7While it is not the latest generation, the Garmin Fenix 7 stands out as a top-tier heart rate monitor, designed for rowers who demand precision and performance. This advanced device not only tracks your heart rate but also offers a wealth of features tailored to enhance your training experience.

With its multi-sport functionality, you can easily switch between rowing, running, and cycling, making it a versatile companion for all your workouts. You’ll appreciate the Fenix 7’s accurate heart rate monitoring, which uses cutting-edge sensors to provide real-time data, helping you optimize your performance.

The vibrant display is easy to read, even in bright sunlight, ensuring you stay informed during your sessions. Plus, its robust design is built to withstand the rigors of outdoor activities, ensuring durability.

One standout feature is the built-in GPS, allowing you to track your rowing routes and distances with precision. The Fenix 7 also integrates seamlessly with your smartphone, giving you access to notifications and music controls on the go.

I have always found that, unless there is some feature that you absolutely have to have, if you are not the type that needs to have the latest, greatest model, the best values are typically found in models that are one or two generations old.  The Garmin Fenix 7 is a great combination of features and value.

Music – To Keep You Rowing Longer

Whether you’re out on the water, or rowing inside on an erg, having the right music can elevate your rowing experience.

When outside, consider in-ear options like AirPods for a seamless, wire-free listen, or go for a portable speaker like the Sonos Move to fill the your indoor rowing space with your favorite tunes.
Each choice has its benefits, so think about what fits your style and space.

In Ear – Apple Airpods

Apple Air PodsIn-ear Apple AirPods have revolutionized the way rowers enjoy music during their workouts or competitions. With their sleek design and wireless convenience, these earbuds provide the ultimate freedom to move without the hassle of tangled cords or. You can easily slip them into your ears, ensuring a snug fit that keeps them secure even during intense rowing sessions.

With touch controls, you can easily adjust volume or skip tracks without breaking your stride. In-ear AirPods not only elevate your music experience but also make your rowing workouts more enjoyable and motivating.

Anker Soundcore EarPodsI use the ear pods for cycling and kayaking a lot. Consequently, I tend to worry about either losing them when riding or ruining expensive ear pods if I take an unepected dip.  I have found these Anker Soundcore earpods a cost-effective alternative that still sounds pretty great, and I won’t lose sleep over if I happen to go for a swim…

Portable – Sonos Move2

Sonos Move2While I enjoy Sonos throught the house, the Sonos Move2 is the weapon of choice in the basement, “pain cave” or even outside on the patio.

For rowers seeking a powerful audio experience on the go, the Sonos Move stands out as a top choice. This portable smart speaker delivers immersive sound quality that enhances your rowing sessions. Larger than most blutooth speakers, it has strong base response and enough power to fill a room and is portable so you can even take it outside when you want to enjoy the fresh air and sunshine while rowing on your erg.

Rowing Machine Maintenance

Maintaining a rowing machine is essential to ensure its longevity and optimal performance. Regular cleaning is a key aspect of maintenance; dust and sweat can accumulate on the machine, leading to potential wear and tear over time.

At least once a week, it’s advisable to wipe down the seat, handles, and rail with a damp cloth to remove any moisture or debris.

Additionally, checking the machine’s components, such as the chain, flywheel, and seat rollers, can help identify any signs of wear. Lubricating the chain with 3 in 1 oil and ensuring that the seat glides smoothly along the rail are also important steps.

It’s also wise to periodically inspect the resistance mechanism, whether it’s air, magnetic, or water, to ensure it is functioning properly. If you have a WaterRower, pop a chlorine tablet in every 6 months to ensuire the water remains clear.

Ryobi Hand Held VacuumIf you have an air-resistance rower, like a Concept2 or Rogue Echo, it is a good idea to vacuum the dust around the machine and especially in the airvents.  I find the Ryobi Cordless Handheld Vac does a great job…and I never have to worry about batteries or cords.

Lastly, following the manufacturer’s guidelines for maintenance and service intervals will help keep the rowing machine in top condition, allowing for a more enjoyable and effective workout experience. Regular maintenance not only enhances performance but also contributes to safety, preventing potential malfunctions during workouts.
